Do contact lenses expire ?

Do contact lenses have an expiration date?

Contact lenses are small medical devices dedicated to visual correction.
Increasingly adopted by the English, they must however be used in a specific way, quite different from wearing eyeglasses.
Unlike the latter, contact lenses have notably an expiration date that must be spotted and never exceeded.

Why contact lenses do expire

Contact lenses are fragile visual devices and must be handled and stored with care.
To do so, before being packaged, they are sterilised and placed in a perfectly sealed container.
Inside the individual package, the contact lenses are stored in a saline solution.
Contacts have an expiration date as this solution becomes ineffective after a certain amount of time.
In addition, over time, the sealed package can deteriorate or even split open, which could lead to infection of the solution and the lenses.
For this reason, all contact lenses have an expiry date, which is usually four years after packaging.

How to know when they expire

All pairs of contact lenses have an expiry date regardless of the type of lens chosen.
In fact, all annual, monthly and even daily contact lenses expire.
To find out the expiry date of your pair of contacts, simply look on the box or on the individual blister pack.
The date is usually printed on the foil cover and can be recognised by the hourglass or the abbreviation EXP inscribed before it.
This information is usually found alongside other information such as the lot number, the lens diameter or its material.
It is also important not to forget to check the expiry date of the lens prescription to see if it is still valid to renew your lenses.

Can you wear expired contact lenses?

It is strongly recommended not to wear contact lenses whose expiry date has passed.
If you notice that your contact lenses have expired, you should throw them away.
As mentioned above, the saline solution in which the lens is stored may no longer be effective.
The contact lens may then become infected and no longer be fit to wear.
The same applies to contact lens solution that has expired.
If contact lenses have been worn without knowing they had expired, they should be removed as soon as possible.
If the mistake is only made once or twice, it is usually of no consequence.
However, if this act is repeated several times or the expired lenses have been worn for a long time, then it can infect the eye.
If so, contact your ophthalmologist as soon as possible to determine what needs to be done.
