Can contact lenses get stuck ?

Why a contact lens can get stuck and how to react

Wearing contact lenses is very safe as long as you follow some basic rules for their care and handling.
However, both novice and experienced lens wearers can sometimes encounter difficulties with their lenses.
For various reasons, a lens can get stuck in the eye and it is essential to know what to do if this happens.

Reasons why a contact lens can get stuck in the eye

The main reason why a lens will get stuck is if it dries out or the eye dries out.
In order to be comfortable and easy to remove, the contact lens must be inserted into a well-hydrated eye.
On the one hand, a person may have constant dryness of the eye, which can be an obstacle to wearing contact lenses.
On the other hand, the dryness of the eye can also be momentary and caused by a temporary lack of oxygen.
Drying out of the lens can be caused by poor care of the equipment or by wearing it too long.
This is what happens when a person forgets to remove their contact lenses before going to sleep.
During the night, the eye has less oxygen supply and the lens can dry out on the eye.
After such an omission, the contact lens is usually difficult to remove and may feel stuck in the eye.

What to do if you can't remove your contact lens

First of all, you should not panic and remain calm, even though the situation may be stressful.
It is indeed quite difficult to remove a contact lens in a nervous state.
However, it should be remembered that a stuck lens is unlikely to hurt the eye and will at most just irritate it.
The contact lens can never get behind the eye or get trapped in any way, thanks to the barrier provided by the eyelid.
Once this has been clarified, the first thing to do is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before removing the stuck lens.
This hygienic precaution prevents the lens from getting dirty or the eye from getting infected.
If the lens is in its usual place, a few eye drops are usually enough to make removal easier.
Indeed, by hydrating the equipment, it makes it more flexible and therefore easier to handle.
In the event of initial failure, this operation can be repeated a few minutes later.
When the lens has moved from its usual place, repeated blinking and gentle massage of the eyelid should be done beforehand.
The removal of the contact lens should in any case be carried out meticulously and patiently.
If the lens still remains stuck or has caused severe irritation, visit your ophthalmologist.
