How to clean contact lenses

The keys to good contact lens care

As small optical devices placed directly on the surface of the eye, contact lenses require very special care.
They must be handled meticulously and cared for according to strict rules.
Here are the main steps for cleaning your contact lenses and keeping them in good condition.

Impeccable hygiene is essential

To clean your contact lenses properly, the first thing you need to do is clean your hands.
Dirty hands could contaminate the visual devices or make them even dirtier.
So, before handling your lenses, wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water and dry them afterwards.
Whenever contact lenses need to be handled, perfect hygiene is always imperative.

Steps for cleaning contact lenses

On a daily basis, diligent care of contact lenses is essential to ensure that they are fit for wear.
Once removed, each lens must be placed in the palm of your hand and gently rubbed with a cleaning solution.
A few drops are all that's needed for initial cleaning before the lens is placed in its storage case filled with fresh solution.
This cleaning solution is specifically designed to clean and disinfect lenses.
It is essential to ensure that each left and right lens is put in the right place.
Once this has been done, the storage case must be closed tightly to prevent any germs or dust from entering.
The lenses need to be immersed in the solution for at least six to eight hours, so it's a good idea to leave them overnight in their case.

The importance of the solution used

The cleaning solution is at the heart of good contact lens cleaning and storage.
It is essential to use a suitable solution supplied by the optician and never replace it with water.
Water can contain bacteria or other microbes that can infect contact lenses.
What's more, the cleaning solution must be renewed each time to be effective.
So it's not a good idea to simply top up the old solution, which is no longer sterile, with new solution.
You should also always check the solution's expiry date and that it is properly sealed.

Remember to also clean the lens case

While the cleaning solution in the contact lens case must always be fresh, the case itself must also be spotless.
Often neglected, the storage case must also be cleaned regularly so that it is fit for use.
A soiled case could contaminate the solution or the contact lenses inside.
What's more, a damaged lens case should preferably be replaced as soon as possible.
