How to clean eyeglass frames

The right way to clean your eyeglass frame

A pair of spectacles worn every day can easily become dirty, both on the lenses and the frame.
Regular cleaning is therefore essential if you want to keep your glasses looking their best for as long as possible.
Here's how to properly care for your plastic or metal spectacle frames.

How to clean a plastic spectacle frame

Worn every day, a pair of plastic-framed glasses will tend to whiten or tarnish over time.
This is generally due to exposure to light or dust, which can be avoided by keeping your glasses in their case.
To clean plastic frames properly without damaging them, avoid hot water, which could deform them.
Washing it with lukewarm water is recommended, to which a few drops of lemon juice can be added.
Plastic spectacle frames can also be cleaned with a specially adapted wipe.
On the other hand, bleach or washing-up liquid should never be used to clean plastic frames, otherwise they will be damaged.
It is important to thoroughly clean all parts of the frame, not forgetting the inside of the temples and nose bridge.
Once washed, the frame should be left to dry in the open air or dried with a microfibre cloth to avoid any scratches.
It should be noted that, unlike lenses, a dirty frame is not necessarily immediately obvious.
It is therefore essential to clean your frame regularly to keep it looking good for a long time.

Cleaning a metal eyeglass frame

Glasses with titanium, stainless steel or steel frames also need to be cleaned regularly.
Day-to-day cleaning is fairly easy, as simply running them under lukewarm water is usually enough to remove any dust.
For more thorough cleaning, metal frames should be cleaned with soapy water.
To ensure a thorough and successful cleaning, you need to go through all the parts of the frame, including the nose pads.
Moisture from perspiration can cause dirt to form on the inside of the temples or nose bridge.
These inner parts in particular will need to be scrubbed thoroughly.
However, all cleaning should be carried out gently to avoid damaging the frame.
Indeed, a metal eyeglass frame can easily be deformed when handled too roughly.
