Worn every day, our prescription glasses are often put to the test and can sometimes undergo wear and tear.
Over time, you may especially notice that your lenses have turned slightly yellow.
Here's why prescription glasses lenses can turn yellow and what you can do about it.
Prescription lenses generally yellow over time as a result of normal wear and tear.
Although this yellowing will usually occur after two or three years, it can vary depending on how the glasses are used.
In fact, prescription glasses that are worn outdoors tend to yellow more quickly.
The reason for this is that the main cause of lens yellowing is overexposure to sunlight.
Otherwise, eyeglass lenses can also turn yellow due to oxidation of the plastic material from which they are made.
Therefore, prescription lenses can yellow more easily if they are made of sun-sensitive, oxidising plastic.
And they will yellow even faster or more intensely if they are made from a poor quality material.
In fact, good quality eyeglass lenses have a thick, effective anti-UV coating which usually protects them from turning yellow.
It is highly recommended that you do not keep your prescription glasses with yellowed lenses.
Although they won't damage your eyesight as such, they may slightly alter your colour vision.
If your prescription lenses have turned slightly yellow, you can try cleaning them to restore their original clarity.
To do so, put a little cleaning solution on a microfibre cloth.
Then wipe the lenses by gently rubbing the soaked cloth in circles.
Eyeglass lenses should be cleaned gently and carefully to avoid any damage.
If the yellowing persists, it is strongly recommended that you talk to your optician about changing your lenses.
In fact, yellowing lenses can be a warning sign that it's time to change your prescription glasses and have your eyesight checked.
It should be pointed out that this can be prevented by keeping your glasses in their case when not in use and away from direct exposure to the sun.
Cleaning your glasses regularly, if possible every day, can also help prevent yellowing.
Feel free to ask your Optical Center optician for advice if the lenses of your prescription glasses have yellowed.
