Can prescription sunglasses be polarized?

Polarisation of prescription sunglasses

Quality eyewear is designed to provide the greatest possible visual comfort.
To achieve this, they need to be fitted with lightweight, solid frames and efficient lenses.
While plain sunglasses are generally polarised, can prescription sunglasses also be as well?

What is lens polarisation?

Spectacle lenses are made up of several different elements, the combination of which determines their visual quality.
In addition to the material from which they are made, they may have different layers or filters.
For example, lenses may have an anti-dust or anti-shock coating, or an anti-UV or anti-blue light filter.
These different surface treatments can be combined to create lenses that offer the best visual comfort.
To this end, a polarising filter is generally suggested for sunglass lenses.
This filter eliminates or at least reduces as far as possible the light reflections created by a flat surface.
This can be caused by the sun reflecting off road surfaces, snow or even the surface of water.
Polarised lenses have a system that blocks rays that vibrate horizontally.
The filter is made up of microscopic crystals oriented in the same direction to force the light to vibrate only vertically.
Wearing this type of lens means you are no longer dazzled and your vision remains comfortable, even in very bright conditions.
Polarised sunglasses are therefore particularly suitable for outdoor sports.

Is polarisation of prescription lenses possible?

It is perfectly possible to polarise prescription sunglasses, in the same way as sunglasses without correction.
The polarising filter can indeed be applied to corrective sunglasses, whether single vision or progressive.
Wearing glasses with polarised corrective lenses is particularly recommended for driving.
They avoid the glare of light, which is all the stronger on the flat, transparent surface of the lens glass, while maintaining visual clarity.
The driver is thus protected from possible blindness, which, even if only temporary, can be very dangerous on the road.
Visual acuity remains intact whatever the external conditions, providing optimum visual comfort.
People who need vision correction also appreciate polarised lenses for their ability to reduce eyestrain.
What's more, polarised corrective sunglasses can be worn by everyone, even babies.
The thinning of the lens can sometimes have an effect on polarisation, which is why you should seek advice from your Optical Center optician.
