Can you shower with contact lenses?

Taking a shower with your contact lenses

Wearing contact lenses can be very practical on a day-to-day basis, but you need to follow strict rules for their use and care.
Contact lenses are indeed small, fragile visual correction devices that must be preserved as much as possible.
The question arises as to whether you can shower with your contact lenses.

Incompatibility between contact lenses and water

Contact lenses can be worn for many everyday activities, particularly sports.
Although they may seem all-purpose, contact lenses are still fragile under certain types of conditions, such as heat or cold.
And water is one of the elements from which this visual equipment must absolutely be protected.
Whether from a swimming pool, the sea or simply the tap, water is indeed not at all compatible with contact lenses.
This is because water can contain bacteria and other microbes that can infect or damage the lens.
That's why it's not advisable to immerse yourself in water with your contact lenses in, and especially not to shower while wearing them.

Consequences of showering with your contact lenses in

As with swimming, it is therefore strongly recommended to remove your contact lenses before taking a shower.
First of all, putting your contact lenses in water can damage them.
The lens tends to absorb the water it comes into contact with very quickly.
This can deform the contact lens, making it no longer comfortable or efficient in terms of visual sharpness.
What's more, the lens can also introduce microbes from the water into your eyes.
This can lead to eye irritation and even infection, ranging from mild to more serious.
A contact lens damaged by water can also affect the cornea.

What to do if you showered with your contact lenses in

It can happen that you inadvertently step into the shower with your contact lenses in.
If this happens, it's important to take the right precautions to reduce the risk of harmful consequences.
The first thing to do when getting out of the shower is to dry your hands before handling your lenses.
These should then, of course, be removed as quickly as possible so as not to leave them in contact with the eyes for any longer.
While daily lenses can be immediately disposed, other types of lenses should be examined first.
Thus, even monthly contact lenses will be thrown away and replaced if damaged.
If this is not the case, the contact lenses will be placed in solution to be disinfected before being put back in later.
However, it's strongly advised to consult an optician if you have any doubts about your lenses, or an ophthalmologist if your eye is irritated.
