Throughout the year, our pair of sunglasses follows us everywhere and is often essential.
Worn at any time of day, sunglasses mainly protect our eyes from the UV rays emitted by the sun.
But are sunglasses also effective at blocking the entry of blue light from screens?
These days, most people are exposed to numerous screens on a daily basis, such as their smartphone or computer.
These screens emit a very specific type of light, commonly known as blue light.
At a reasonable dose and distance, this light is in no way harmful to the eyes.
However, when our eyes are overexposed to screens, blue light can affect our vision.
An overdose of blue light can indeed cause visual fatigue, headaches and dry eyes.
Too much blue light can also reduce your melatonin levels and disrupt your sleep.
To avoid the harmful effects of blue light, screen time should be reduced and a distance left between the eye and the screen.
A specific treatment to block this type of light can also be applied to the lenses of your prescription glasses.
As mentioned above, some eyeglass lenses filter out blue light so that it does not affect our eyes.
Sunglasses lenses are originally designed to filter out UV rays.
However, certain tints of sunglasses can also provide protection against blue light.
Sunglasses with yellow lenses, for example, are particularly well-suited for screen use.
Similarly, orange or brown tints can be adapted to cope with blue light.
What's more, as with prescription glasses, a special blue-light filter can be applied to sunglass lenses.
Whatever option you choose, we strongly advise you to ask your Optical Center optician for advice.
They will be able to help you find the best way to protect yourself in front of screens.
However, simply wearing standard sunglasses will not protect you from their blue light.
