Can you wear sunglasses on a driving test?

Are sunglasses allowed during a driving test?

The driving test is as stressful for the candidate as it is regulated.
Passing the test requires a thorough knowledge of the Highway Code and how the car works, as well as clear, accurate and unobstructed vision.
For this reason, you may want to consider whether it is possible and advisable to wear sunglasses during your driving test.

Rules relating to glasses for driving tests

As with driving in general, there are certain rules that must be observed during the driving test.
One of these is that if you have a visual problem, you must wear your optical equipment.
Candidates must therefore wear their prescription glasses or contact lenses during the test.
The glasses will also have to appear on the future driving licence photograph.
Besides, once the test passed, they must be worn at all times while driving.
As far as sunglasses are concerned, it is perfectly legal to wear them during the test.
The same applies to driving lessons, where candidates may wear sunglasses if necessary.
It should be noted, however, that in the event of a visual problem, the sunglasses must be fitted to your vision.
In this case, sunglasses can also be worn over contact lenses.
In addition, if a candidate chooses to wear sunglasses for the test, they will need to make their eye movements more conspicuous.
They should not only move their eyes, which will then be unnoticeable to the examiner, but also move their head.
Besides, any examiner has the right to ask you to remove your sunglasses if he or she feels that they are interfering with their judgement.

The benefits of wearing sunglasses when driving

While sunglasses are generally allowed for driving tests, they may even be advisable in some circumstances.
For example, in bright conditions, such as during summer, sunglasses may be recommended.
Sunglasses not only protect your eyes from UV rays, but also ensure that the sun does not affect your vision.
Indeed, glare, even brief and momentary, can prevent you from seeing the road properly and can constitute a hazard.
Sunglasses can also be useful when the sun is reflecting off the ground.
Sunglasses for driving should preferably have grey and polarised lenses and a wrap-around frame.
Glasses with photochromic lenses, whose tint changes according to the light conditions, may also be advisable.
In other words, sunglasses can sometimes be an asset for safe driving.
