How to treat eye irritation from contact lenses

Eye irritation caused by contact lenses and its solutions

Wearing contact lenses requires compliance with certain essential rules, particularly in terms of handling and storage.
Although contact lenses are generally safe to wear, you may occasionally encounter a few practical difficulties.
For example, contact lens wearers may experience eye irritation, which can be treated quickly and effectively.

Why can contact lenses cause eye irritation?

In the vast majority of cases, wearing contact lenses is completely safe and in no way dangerous for the eyes.
However, contact lenses must be handled and used in impeccable hygiene conditions.
Poor care of the equipment or handling lenses with unclean hands can lead to soiling of the lens.
In fact, bacteria and other dust can settle and accumulate on the contact lens.
Now, contact lenses are placed directly on the surface of the eye and can therefore infect the eye.
As a result, wearing contaminated contact lenses can cause eye irritation or inflammation.
Keratitis, which affects the cornea, remains the most common irritation caused by contact lenses.
Eye irritation can also be caused by an allergy to the lens or lens solution, or by wearing the equipment for too long.
Whatever the cause of the inflammation, it must be treated as soon as possible.

Treatment of eye irritation from contact lenses

Whatever the origin, eye irritation can be very unpleasant, with reddening of the eye, itching and even pain.
The first thing to do is to remove your contact lenses as soon as you notice any irritation.
This allows the eye to breathe and take the time to rest without visual equipment.
The contact lenses, cleaned and checked, will only be put back in once the eye inflammation has subsided.
During this time, it is advisable to wear eyeglasses instead.
To reduce eye irritation, eye drops may be applied to the affected eye.
A cold compress can also be laid over the irritated eye to soothe it for a while.
However, if the irritation lasts too long or recurs, it is advisable to consult your optician.
The inflammation could be due to an allergic reaction to the lenses or the cleaning solution.
In this case, you may be suggested other contact lenses or the alternative of wearing prescription glasses.
