Can you get waterproof contact lenses ?

Are there water-resistant contact lenses?

Wearing contact lenses can be very handy in many day-to-day situations.
However, these visual devices cannot be immersed in or come into contact with water.
So it's natural to wonder whether it's possible to get waterproof contact lenses.

Why contact lenses are not compatible with water

Strict care rules must always be observed by contact lens wearers.
One of the most important requirements is to protect contact lenses from contact with water.
It is therefore forbidden to take a shower with your contact lenses or to swim in the sea or swimming pool with them.
The fact is that contact lenses are not compatible with water.
This applies equally to swimming pool water, sea water, river water or simply water from the tap or shower.
Water naturally contains bacteria that can settle on contact lenses.
The deposit of these micro-organisms can damage the equipment and consequently infect the eyes.
This is one of the reasons why contact lenses are cleaned with a special solution and not with clear water.
If the lenses have been accidentally immersed in water, it is advisable to remove them quickly.
The chlorine in swimming pools is all the more damaging as it stiffens the lenses, making them harder to remove.
An ophthalmological consultation is even recommended if an eye infection develops afterwards.

Are there waterproof contact lenses?

Strictly speaking, there are no contact lenses designed to be waterproof.
The easiest solution is simply to remove your lenses when you go swimming.
Contact lenses are indeed fragile visual equipment that should be preserved as much as possible.
If your aquatic activities require you to be able to see well, then it's best to opt for daily soft contact lenses.
These can be disposed of after swimming and easily replaced.
If you opt for this solution, remember to bring physiological saline solution to relieve your eyes when you get out of the water.
You can also opt for diving goggles or a diving mask that can be adapted to your eyesight.
Don't hesitate to ask your Optical Center optician for advice on a solution for swimming as a contact lens wearer.
