What can't you do with contact lenses?

The don'ts when wearing contact lenses

Wearing contact lenses can be practical, but you need to follow certain rules when using them.
After all, contact lenses are small, fragile and extremely thin pieces of optical equipment.
So here's what you can't do, and what you should avoid doing, when wearing contact lenses.

Swimming and showering

When wearing lenses, all contact, even indirect, with water must be absolutely avoided.
And this applies whether the water comes from the swimming pool, the sea or even just the tap.
In fact, water can contain bacteria or microbes that can infect contact lenses.
That's why contact lenses are never cleaned with water, but always with a special solution.
It is therefore advisable to remove contact lenses before swimming or showering.

Sleeping

Contact lenses must be removed before going to bed, or even having a nap.
Closed eyelids prevent a sufficient influx of oxygen to the eye to keep it hydrated.
What's more, the blinking of the eye that regulates tears is also slowed down.
As a result, a contact lens will tend to dry out and become difficult to remove the next morning.
What's more, sleeping with contact lenses in can lead to eye irritation, which can blur vision and be painful.

Rubbing your eyes

Each time contact lenses are inserted, they are delicately and precisely placed in the eye.
So when you rub your eyes, it's possible to cause even a slight displacement of the lens, which can also rub against the eye surface.
As a result, vision can be blurred, discomfort felt, the eye irritated and, in the worst case, the cornea damaged.
So when you feel the urge to rub your eyes, it's important to think ahead and temporarily remove your contact lenses.

Not being thoughtful

When you wear contact lenses, you can't afford to be careless or absent-minded.
Contact lenses require indeed regular care and special attention.
In terms of hygiene, you should always wash your hands thoroughly before handling them.
In addition, contact lenses should always be cleaned before they are inserted, and their case also cleaned regularly.
Lenses must also be protected from heat and cold and stored in a case filled with fresh solution.
Finally, it's important to remember to change them according to their expiry date and how often they need renewing.

Wearing them too much

It is recommended to wear your contact lenses between eight and twelve hours at most per day.
This can vary depending on your habits and how accustomed you are to wearing them.
Even though wearing contact lenses can be very comfortable, your eyes still need a substantial daily break to breathe.
That's why it's all the more inadvisable to leave your contact lenses in when you sleep.

Keeping them when the eye is irritated or affected

Whatever the reason, when the eye is irritated, red, itchy or painful, it is essential to remove your contact lenses.
To recover completely, the eye must be left free, even if the lens is not necessarily the cause of the irritation.
In the case of conjunctivitis, for example, the contact lenses will be temporarily replaced by prescription glasses.
