Are all contact lenses the same?

Differences between the various types of contact lenses

At first sight, people who are not used to contact lenses may be confused about which pair to choose.
In fact, not all contact lenses are the same, and each model has its own specific characteristics.
Here are the main types of contact lenses available to you and the differences between them.

Cosmetic or corrective contact lenses

The first distinction to be made between all contact lenses is whether they are cosmetic or corrective.
In fact, some contact lenses are worn solely for aesthetic reasons and carry no visual correction.
Designed to change the colour or appearance of the eyes, cosmetic contact lenses are particularly popular among young women.
Corrective lenses, on the other hand, are prescribed by an ophthalmologist to correct a visual problem in the same way as eyeglasses.
These contact lenses are supplied by the optician with the exact visual correction required for optimum visual acuity.
As such, corrective lenses can be unifocal or progressive, depending on the type of visual problem.

Soft or rigid contact lenses

Depending on the material they are made from, contact lenses fall into two categories: soft and rigid.
Very easy to use, soft contact lenses are in fact the most commonly worn.
This type of lens is available as disposable and can be adapted to all types of visual correction.
Rigid lenses are generally recommended for people with dry eyes, as they are particularly permeable to oxygen.
Although these contact lenses are more expensive and harder to use, some though can be kept for up to two years.

Contact lenses for one day, one month or more

Contact lenses can have different renewal options, and this criterion is far from insignificant.
In fact, lifestyle and need must be taken into account when choosing the type of contact lenses.
These visual aids can be daily, weekly, monthly, fortnightly or even annual ones.
People who are in a hurry or only need them occasionally will generally opt for disposable contact lenses.
The other contact lenses require regular and rigorous care, which is something to be taken into account.
Don't hesitate to ask your Optical Center optician for advice to make sure you choose the type of contact lenses that suits you best.
