Can you wear sunglasses while driving ?

Driving wearing sunglasses

As we all know, wearing sunglasses is imperative in many circumstances, especially when it is bright outside.
Driving a car requires a clear and precise view of the road in order to avoid accidents or misjudgements.
It is therefore natural to ask whether it is possible to wear sunglasses while driving and which ones are recommended.

Wearing sunglasses while driving: allowed and advisable

First, it's important to know that it is perfectly legal to wear sunglasses when driving a car.
As a matter of fact, driving a car requires you to be in full possession of your vision to get a good grasp of the road.
Indeed, almost 90% of the information needed for driving is transmitted by sight.
This is why it is essential to protect your eyes from ambient light, reverb and glare.
Wearing sunglasses in bright light can therefore prevent any risk of accident or misperception of road hazards.
Thus, if the use of sunglasses while driving is allowed, it is sometimes even highly recommended.
In case of strong glare or sudden shift in light, the sun visor is often insufficient or not very convenient.
It is therefore strongly advisable to always have a pair of sunglasses in your car so that you are equipped when the need arises.

What sunglasses are recommended for driving?

While sunglasses are recommended when driving in bright light, it is important to choose the most appropriate pair.
Indeed, some sunglasses are more suitable for driving due to their properties.
First of all, it should be remembered that your wearing of eyeglasses is mentioned on your driver's licence.
Thus, visually impaired people must wear sunglasses adapted to their sight.
Secondly, it is advisable to wear polarised lenses which are particularly suitable for reducing glare and improving contrast.
These lenses should preferably be grey, which is the most suitable tint for driving as it protects the eyes even in bright light.
Brown sunglass lenses are also suitable for driving most of the year, while green glasses should be avoided.
Photochromic lenses are particularly useful for driving since they adapt their colouring to the intensity of the light.
Furthermore, it is advisable to use category 3 sunglasses when driving, as they filter out UV rays perfectly, even in bright sunlight.
On the other hand, category 4 lenses are not allowed as they are not at all suitable for driving.
Finally, it is advisable to opt for a thin frame so that it does not obstruct your visual field.
Also, large sunglass lenses will allow coverage of the entire field of vision and lateral protection of the eyes.
