How long do contact lenses last without lens solution?
Contact lenses are very popular in everyday life for their discretion and the freedom of movement they offer.
On the other hand, these little visual aids require careful and regular care.
In particular, it is essential to always keep your contact lenses in their solution to avoid any inconvenience.
What happens when contact lenses are left out of solution
With the exception of daily disposables, contact lenses require regular, regulated care.
In particular, they must be stored in their case, immersed in a cleaning and disinfecting solution.
This immersion ensures that your contact lenses stay hydrated, free from impurities and ready to wear.
First of all, when contact lenses are left out of solution, they can dry out and harden.
This makes them more difficult, if not impossible, to wear and can cause considerable discomfort.
Their dryness also triggers a difficulty in putting them in and taking them out.
What's more, contact lenses stored without solution can get infected with microbes, dust or other impurities.
Once put in, the contact lenses can then also infect the eyes on which they are placed.
In fact, an unworn contact lens left in the open air for fifteen to twenty minutes can already dry out.
This means that contact lenses must always be kept in their cleaning solution.
When this is not the case, the lenses generally need to be changed fairly quickly.
What to do if there's no lens solution?
The lens solution is specifically designed to ensure that these small and fragile visual devices are kept in good condition.
As such, it cannot be replaced by any other care solution, and certainly not by tap water.
The latter may contain micro-organisms that are harmful to contact lenses and lacks the disinfecting power of the solution.
However, it can happen, in various circumstances, that you run out of product or forget to take it with you.
In such cases, a temporary solution can be found in the exceptional use of a salt water solution.
Afterwards, it is essential to obtain a lens solution as soon as possible to rehydrate and disinfect your contact lenses correctly.
It's also a good idea to check your visual aids to make sure they haven't been damaged or altered.
