Multifocal contact lenses: How they work and for whom

Contact lenses can correct any type of visual deficiency, such as myopia or astigmatism.
The model of contact lens is shaped and chosen according to the light refraction defect to be adjusted.
Thus, multifocal contact lenses are specifically designed to correct presbyopia.

How multifocal lenses correct vision

Each type of contact lens is designed differently depending on the refractive error to be corrected.
Therefore, multifocal contact lenses, also known as varifocal lenses, have several different visual correction zones.
The central part usually corrects near vision while the periphery corrects distance vision and the in-between any other intermediate distance.
However, the adaptation is done naturally by the brain without the eye having to position itself in a specific direction.
Multifocal contact lenses differ in this respect from bifocal lenses.
Multifocal lenses directly provide a clear visual field thanks to the brain instantly sorting out what is necessary to see.
The lens adapts to the movement of the cornea of the eye, depending on the distance you need to look.
It will correct slightly downwards for close-up viewing and upwards for distance viewing.
The visual transition between the different distances is progressive and unnoticeable.
An adaptation period is yet essential to get used to this type of contact lens.

Who should use multifocal contact lenses?

As mentioned above, multifocal contact lenses cover and correct the entire visual field, regardless of distance.
These specific contacts are particularly intended for people affected by presbyopia.
Indeed, with age, the crystalline lens hardens and makes it more difficult to see clearly up close.
People affected by presbyopia are generally over forty years old, as this disorder is linked to a natural aging of the eye.
Thanks to multifocal contact lenses, the eyes no longer have to make continuous accommodation efforts.
With these lenses, presbyopes can see clearly at near and far distances and at any intermediate distance.
In contrast to bifocal lenses with two separate correction areas, the eye does not have to be directed up or down to see clearly.
Multifocal contact lenses are therefore naturally prescribed by the ophthalmologist for people with presbyopia.
Rigid varifocal contact lenses may also be prescribed to correct certain astigmatism or corneal anomalies.
