Varifocal contact lenses

All you need to know about varifocal contact lenses

Swapping glasses for contact lenses is becoming an increasingly popular choice in the UK.
However, the lenses must be strictly adapted to the visual defect they are intended to correct.
For example, some people will need to wear a pair of varifocal contact lenses.

What are varifocal contact lenses?

Also referred to as multifocal contact lenses, varifocal lenses have multiple focal points of different corrective powers.
Thanks to their unique design, varifocal contact lenses gradually cover the entire field of vision.
This means that a person with this type of contacts will be able to see both near and far, and everything in between.
Unlike bifocal lenses, there is no clear separation between the different corrections.
With no special effort or eye movement required, the person can thus easily see at any distance.
In fact, with these lenses, the brain sorts through the images and adapts your vision to what you want to see.
Varifocal contact lenses are available in rigid and soft versions, which are prescribed according to your specific visual acuity.
Rigid lenses take a little longer to adapt to, but can correct more severe visual problems.

How to get varifocal contact lenses ?

As with any pair of contact lenses, a prior ophthalmological consultation is essential.
Indeed, this medical appointment allows, through specific tests, to evaluate precisely your visual deficiency.
This consultation also allows the eye doctor to determine whether or not you can wear this type of lens.
Varifocal contact lenses will be prescribed to people presenting a presbyopic disorder.
This visual impairment is caused by the natural ageing of the crystalline lens and occurs with advancing age.
The visual disorder of presbyopia mainly leads to difficulties in seeing clearly at close range.
Presbyopia is usually associated with another visual impairment such as myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia.
Varifocal contact lenses correct visual accommodation by compensating for the eye's lack of focus.
To obtain these lenses, a valid ophthalmological prescription must be given to the optician.
The latter will design a pair of varifocal contact lenses that are exactly adapted to your vision.
