How to store contact lenses

Proper storage of contact lenses with or without a case

Wearing contact lenses requires strict compliance with certain rules of hygiene and care.
They are indeed fragile pieces of equipment that must always be kept clean so as not to infect the eye on which they are fitted.
What's more, storing lenses properly helps preserve their effectiveness and extend their life.
So, when contact lenses are not daily disposable ones, they must be meticulously stored to ensure they are well cared for.

Storing contact lenses in their case

Non-disposable contact lenses are best kept in their case when not in use.
The case must be filled with a specific cleaning solution in which the lenses are soaked, usually overnight, to be cleaned and rehydrated.
The solution must be fresh and renewed every day, as if it is not changed, it can become ineffective, and can even soil the lenses.
What's more, when lenses are stored in their case, it is essential to check that the left and right lenses are correctly positioned.
This ensures that you don't make a mistake when putting them back in your eyes, knowing that they don't have exactly the same correction.
Storing contact lenses in their case generally becomes part of your daily routine.
Finally, don't forget to also clean the case regularly, to prevent bacteria from settling in.
Ideally, the lens case should be changed every three months and at least once every six months to ensure optimum preservation.

What to do without a lens case or cleaning solution?

For various reasons, people can find themselves without their contact lens case.
Ideally, whenever possible, contact lenses should be changed the next time they are worn.
If this is not possible, a makeshift container can be used to store the lenses overnight.
To do this, a small, sealable box of any kind needs to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
Once completely dry, this box can be filled with contact lens cleaning solution.
The contact lenses can then be stored there overnight, on an exceptional basis.
If the situation is to last longer, it is essential to buy a new contact lens case.
If you run out of lens cleaning solution, you should never use water as a substitute.
Only a saline solution can replace the product for a few hours, so that you don't have to sleep with your contact lenses.
