Can you wear contact lenses with a stye?

Consequences of a stye for contact lens wearers

Contact lenses are unique in that they are fitted directly onto the surface of the eye.
So, in order to wear these visual aids, it is essential that your eyes are in good condition.
The emergence of an eye infection such as a stye can therefore call into question the possibility of wearing contact lenses.

All you need to know about styes

Bacterial infection of the eye, a stye is completely benign and generally disappears on its own after a few days.
A stye appears as a red lump at the base of the eyelash, usually on the upper or lower eyelid.
However, this pimple-like or boil-like lump can also sometimes occur under the eyelid.
The stye is usually filled with pus and can be a source of discomfort and sometimes even soreness.
As a matter of fact, this lump at the edge of the eyelid can be very annoying, but it can also be painful.
To relieve this discomfort, a compress of warm water can be applied to the affected eye.
To avoid infecting the stye, it is essential not to touch it or try to pierce it.
If the infection does not disappear on its own after one or two weeks, it is advisable to consult your ophthalmologist.
It should be noted that people with dry eyes, certain medical conditions or who are under stress may be particularly prone to styes.
For others, this infection, which is generally caused by staphylococcus aureus bacteria, can often be prevented by strict hygiene.

Can I still wear my contact lenses with a stye?

It is worth noting that contact lenses can sometimes be the very cause of a stye.
The reason is usually improper handling of these visual aids, which are placed directly on the eye.
Contact lens wearers are thus particularly prone to this bacterial infection.
When a stye do appear, it is strongly recommended that you do not wear contact lenses until the eye has healed.
Even if you follow strict hygiene rules, it's best to let the affected eye rest.
The pain or discomfort caused by a stye can make wearing contact lenses very unpleasant and uncomfortable.
During the period of infection, contact lenses should then be preferably replaced by eyeglasses.
