Wearing sunglasses after cataract surgery

Do you need sunglasses after a cataract operation?

Cataracts affect a large number of people across the country and around the world.
However, this sight-threatening condition can be treated with surgery.
After cataract surgery, the question arises as to whether wearing sunglasses can be beneficial.

All you need to know about cataracts and cataract surgery

Our eyes and vision evolve throughout our lives and go through a natural ageing process.
One of the possible consequences of this age-related process is the development of cataracts.
The crystalline lens, a transparent lens behind the iris, becomes partially or completely opaque, allowing less light to pass through.
As a result, the person's vision is impaired and altered, sometimes irreversibly.
This condition can affect only one eye or both eyes at the same time.
Although cataracts are mainly due to ageing, they can also be caused by pathology or trauma.
Certain factors, such as smoking or excessive exposure to sunlight, can increase the risk of cataracts.
The surgical treatment of this eye condition is one of the most commonly performed operations in the world.
This surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic and takes about thirty minutes.
It involves removing the crystalline lens and replacing it by implanting a more powerful artificial one.
If both eyes are affected, the two operations cannot be carried out on the same day and will need to be done at least a few days apart.

Should I wear sunglasses after cataract surgery?

After surgery, the treated eye is covered by a protective bandage to prevent infection.
Once the eye patch is removed, the patient is asked to apply eye drops into the eye.
However, the newly operated eye remains vulnerable for a few days after the operation.
It is therefore strongly recommended that you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
Sunglass lenses act as a barrier to prevent dust or microbes from entering and infecting the eye.
Sunglasses also protect your eyes from anything that could damage them, such as strong winds or bright light.
However, to ensure you get good protection from UV rays, you need to wear sunglasses fitted with category 3 or 4 lenses.
Wearing sunglasses will also give your eyes a chance to fully rest while they recover from surgery.
Feel free to ask your ophthalmologist or surgeon for advice on wearing sunglasses after cataract surgery.
