Do contact lenses protect from blue light?

Can contact lenses have a blue light protection?

Many people have opted for the performance and discretion of contact lenses.
In fact, these little visual aids provide the same comfort and efficiency in terms of visual correction as prescription glasses.
However, it's fair to ask whether contact lenses provide the same protection, particularly against blue light.

Blue light and its effects

An integral part of the white light of the light spectrum, blue light is naturally received by the eye on a daily basis.
This imperceptible exposure is beneficial to our organism and is even part of the circadian cycle that regulates our daily lives.
While blue light is present in natural light, it is also present in artificial light sources.
In particular, it is emitted by LED bulbs, but especially by screens.
Nowadays, we are all overexposed to blue light from our smartphones, tablets, televisions and computers.
At a reasonable distance and in limited proportions, blue light from screens poses no particular concern.
However, in high doses, particularly daily overexposure, it can become harmful.
In fact, at high intensities, blue light can cause a range of more or less serious problems.
Firstly, it can lead to chronic visual fatigue, causing eye rubbing and red eyes.
Over time, heavy exposure to blue light can lead to sleep and mood disturbances.
In the most serious cases, overexposure to this type of light can lead to depression or a predisposition to AMD.
So it's essential to protect your eyes from blue light, especially when you're significantly exposed to it.

Contact lenses against blue light

Whatever their type, conventional contact lenses do not protect against blue light.
However, there are now contact lenses specially designed to block light from screens.
Numerous brands now offer models with a blue-light-blocking technology.
In the same way as blue light glasses, these contact lenses have the ability to filter out this type of radiation.
Made of hydrogel, they are similar to conventional soft contact lenses and require the same handling and care.
Furthermore, almost all blue light contact lenses also come with UV protection.
These contacts mean you don't have to choose between wearing contact lenses and being comfortable and well protected from the screens.
They offer a good and discrete alternative to wearing blue-light-proof glasses.
However, the latter can be chosen to protect against blue light if you already have contact lenses and don't intend to change them.
Besides, blue light blocking glasses can perfectly be worn over contact lenses.
