Washing your face with contact lenses

Can I wash my face while wearing contact lenses?

Contact lenses are valued for their discretion and comfort, which means they can even be forgotten about.
However, these little vision aids are fragile and need to be protected from any possible damage to keep your eyes safe.
So, knowing how dangerous water can be for contact lenses, it's fair to ask if it's possible to wash your face while wearing them.

Do you have to remove your contact lenses for face washing?

People usually wash their face in the morning, when they are not yet wearing their contact lenses.
And actually, washing your face and showering before putting in your contacts is the best practice.
This prevents your contact lenses from being exposed to tap water, with which they are incompatible.
What's more, if you wash your face with soap or other cosmetic products, they may adhere to your lenses and cause eye irritation.
Washing your face in the evening should also be done after removing your contact lenses.
If you need to wash your face during the day, it is strongly recommended that you temporarily remove your visual aids.
The contact lenses can be left in their case while you wash your face and then reinserted immediately afterwards.

The dangers of water on contact lenses

As a general rule, contact lenses are not compatible with water.
This includes seawater, swimming pool water, and even tap water that we use on a daily basis.
In fact, water can contain all sorts of germs, bacteria and other parasites that can be harmful to contact lenses.
So it's important to follow the same rule as all contact lens wearers: never let your lenses come into contact with water.
It is therefore advisable to remove them before showering or swimming in the sea or pool.
Any contact may result in contamination of the optical device, which may cause eye irritation or inflammation.
More seriously, it can cause acanthamoeba keratitis, which is due to the bacterium of the same name that can be found in tap water.
Water can also deform contact lenses by causing them to swell, which can lead to blurred vision or eye strain.
In the event of accidental contact with water, it is advisable to remove your contact lenses immediately and to dry them out.
In case of eye irritation, it is advisable to wait until the eye has fully recovered before reinserting the contact lens.
If in doubt, consult your eye doctor or your Optical Center optician.
